The Leitch Colleries
In 1897, The Canadian Pacific Railway built a branch line through the Crowsnest Pass in an effort to reach the massive ore bodies of Southwestern British Columbia. Within 3 years the rich coal deposits that lined the mountain stretches of the route were attracting attention.
Homesteaders, railways, and smelter operations handlings B.C's lead/silver and copper deposits needed coal and coke. As a result, prospectors began to scour the Crowsnest pass area and by 1914 coal mines and company towns sprung up along the railway corridor. The Leitch Colleries is the ruins of one such coal mine. This site is located on the east side of the Crowsnest Pass right off highway 3.
